Ergänzung: Mit css (display: table, table-row,...) lässt sich dieser Automatismus erreichen, allerdings gibt es ja dort das Problem, dass für die Überschriften kein colspan möglich ist.
Na dann lass sie doch als das darstellen, was sie eigentlich auch sind: table-caption.
