Aber um es mal konkret zu machen: was vermisst du denn?

Transition/Animation von custom properties:

foo
{
  --value: 1;
  property: var(--value);
  transition: --value 1s;
}

foo:hover, foo:focus
{
  --value: 2;
}

Geht noch nicht, obwohl die Werte numerisch sind.
