2. System File Protection
System file protection is a new feature that comes with Windows 2000 and Windows ME that has the function of preventing the destabilization of the operating system. This is accomplished by making it impossible to replace system files when this new feature is enabled. This creates problems for setup developers when they want to use a different version of a system file than that which ships with the OS. This topic does not go into detail about this functionality other than providing a number of links to locations where details can be found. What I do here is provide a small command line program that prints out the list of protected files and the directories in which these files reside.
You can download this utility, its source code, and a short document that describes the basic approach to getting this list of protected files. This utility will only run on Windows 2000.
