-ich habe da selber mal rumprobiert und kann dir folgende lösung vorschlagen.
davon würde ich abraten...
sie funktioniert ohne frames was sowieso einfacher ist.
das ist IMHO eine unbewiesene Behauptung...

aber auch Probleme macht (siehe Archiv)
über die transparent-bilder stellst du die abmessungen der page ein.
Und was für einen Sinn hat das Ganze, wenn ich doch (im Vorfeld) feste Größen angeben muss?
Wie's mit Frames zu lösen ist, hat Danny, bzw. Joachim ja schon geposted.
Mit Hilfe einer Tabelle könnte man es z.B. so machen:

<colgroup><col width="*"><col width="600"><col width="*"></colgroup>
<tr>
<td>[leer]</td>
<td>Inhalt</td>

</tr>
</table>
