Thank you for your comments!  They are greatly appreciated.

The pattern is a symmetrical composition that I drew pixel by pixel in
photoshop.  One thing I do to help get me started is to find an old piece of
fabric or wallpaper, scan it, then trace over it using a bitmap editor like
photoshop.  After that point, I can add the details in myself.

It certainly takes a great deal of practice to do, and I still need to
practice.  However, if you know anyone who knits or does beadwork, they
could probably give you some good advice too.  Pixels aren't really all that
different from either of these mediums.
