Welche Version - 5.x?
Nun versuche ich gerade mal das phpbb board lokal zu installieren, um damit ein wenig rumzuspielen und bei der Installation kommt:
The PHP configuration on your server doesn't support the database type that you chose.
Hast du den Abschnitt im PHP-Manual über die MySQL-Funktionen bzgl. PHP 5 gelesen?
