Das klingt doch gut! Ein Icon ist eine alternative Darstellung für Text, es hebt sich vom normalen Text ab, also warum nicht <i> für Icon? Bei Stackoverflow hat tatsächlich jemand geschrieben, dass das i Element der Semantik eines Icons deutlich näher wäre als ein span Element und dass er es deshalb nutzen würde.
Nein, ein Icon hat keine textuelle Aussage, die von font-awesome schon gar nicht. Eine alternative Aussage muss man dem Icon künstlich geben.
Das was eventuell eine Aussage hat, sind Unicode Punkte mit Definition im nicht privaten Bereich (falls man als Anwender mit I-Ging Trigramm etwas anfangen kann).
Icons sind keine Alternative (= kein Ersatz) für Text. Sie taugen aber als zusätzlicher Augenreiz.
