Warum es eine Begrenzung auf 5MB gibt, kann ich leider nicht verstehen, vielleicht weiß ja jemand warum das so sein soll.
Das sind nicht generall 5 MB, verschiedene Browser handeln das unterschiedlich – manche haben gar kein Limit, andere 5, 10 oder 20 MB, und wieder andere fragen ggf. beim Benutzer nach, ob er noch zusätzliche MB für eine App spendieren möchte.
Ganz ohne Limit besteht die Gefahr, dass dir eine App den Cache voll knallt – und insb. auf Mobilgeräten mit eher wenig Speicherplatz will man das natürlich nicht.
